Sol Wachtler is a former Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals, the highest court in the state of New York. He served as Chief Judge from 1985 to 1992. Wachtler was appointed to the Court of Appeals in 1972 and served as an Associate Judge before becoming Chief Judge.
Wachtler is known for his contributions to the legal field, including his efforts to improve the efficiency of the judicial system in New York and his advocacy for judicial ethics. He is also the author of several books on the law and legal issues.
In 1993, Wachtler was arrested and convicted on charges of extortion, harassment, and stalking a former lover. He served time in prison and was disbarred. Wachtler later wrote about his experiences in his book "After the Madness: A Judge's Own Prison Memoir."
